Resolved Question: Base narrow horse in the behind?

I'm looking at eventing horses, and I found one that I really like. She has extensive training in dressage and schooling prelim. She's been out of work for 7 months and has absolutely no topline and is rather skinny, but when I hopped on her she was a dream to ride. How much of consistent riding would she need to gain back that muscle? And she's base narrow in the behind, so would that cause any problems? She's wearing a fetlock ring, and when I watched her she didn't seem to knock herself at every.

Open Question: How much should i sell my horse for?

She is a 21 y/o flea bitten gray Swedish Warmblood. She has been trained in dressage and right now is doing very well as a hunter. She has jumped up to 4' but should probably stay in 3' range. she is friendly and doesn't kick or bite. shes 15.2 hh with a slight sway back but other than that her conformation is great. she has had 4 foals and could probably have another. LOVES food!! when i first got her she was prone to abscess but hasn't had one in a year or two now. shes a very sweet little girl. she hasn't had any serious medical issues. i would rate her about a 3or 4 on the tempermant scale(1 being bombproof, 10 being freekazoid) (fyi im not actually selling her im just curious how much she would go for)

Open Question: What do you think of my horse(s) and riding? (video)?

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSP07NTIHSU This is Rita, she is a 27-year-old imported Swedish Warmblood mare. She was Kansas City Dressage Society Mare of the Year in 1989, and an approved Holsteiner broodmare. We bought her along with every her tack for a whopping $350 last September. When we bought her she was pretty underweight. But has gained 350lbs. since. She is about 16hh. She will do pretty much anything you ask of her: up and down hills, through the woods, gives it her best shot over little jumps, loves lunging, you can guide her by her forelock, stands ground tied. Her only issues are with a speedy trot, relearning to move off the leg, and she does not like the clippers at every. How is her conformation (I know, it's not stellar! :D Just humor me.)? Faults, good points? How is her movement? If you had to put a price on her, what would it be? Also, please yell at me for my riding position. What should I do to make it better? You can comment on the black gelding on the other side of the fence as well if you wish, though he is only in it briefly. No, she was not warmed up much before the video. It was only about 45 min before dark so we just pulled her blanket off and played around a bit- that's why she's so dirty, too! D: Plus it was a bit muddy- you'll notice she stops/slows at one point on her lunge circle. She's being careful since it was muddy there. Also, she's not actually for sale. :) She's staying with us. I may half-lease her to someone wanting to just ride around or show on the flat during the summer, though. And I ride hunters. Yep, you can knock me for the helmet thing, too. I know it's not smart, but it was sort of an impromptu ride, and I wouldn't dream of going without one on any other horse. I don't think the absence of helmet affects my position, though. ;)

Open Question: Do you think these ideas would generate much interest?

I have two horse-related things I am considering doing once our barn and outdoor arena are built, but I was wondering if you thought they would generate much interest. The first would be half-leasing our sweet old Swedish Warmblood mare. She is 27, about 16hh, sane and sound. She is not lazy, in fact she really enjoys going, but easy to hold back. Completely safe and easy to handle on the ground. She has former dressage training, but it has been many years since she did that. Currently we just do some basic hunter flatwork with her and trail ride. Ideally I wanted to lease her to a little kid who wanted a safe older horse to trail ride or show (hunter below saddle, ground poles/crossrails, showmanship, etc.). The lease would include riding time 4 days a week, plus the option to trailer off-property to trail ride or show her. The facility where she would be kept would have a barn with heated/air conditioned tack room, bathroom, wash rack with hot water and grooming stall with heat lamps. It would also have an outdoor arena with some jumps or pasture to ride in and is about 5mi away from local trails. Do you think kids/parents would be attracted to this sort of lease? What do you feel would be a fair price per month? My second idea is to hold a tiny horse show for charity. If anyone has ever seen the Pony Hunt Teams at Devon, I wanted to do something similar. The show would have classes for hunt pairs or hunt teams (of 3 riders), and divisions based on fence height. For example: 18" Crossrail Hunt Pairs 18" Crossrail Hunt Teams 2' Hunt Pairs 2' Hunt Teams, etc. It would be a charity/fun show for a horse rescue or humane society, hopefully something that could be held annually, but do you think many people would arrive since the classes are a bit limited in variety? I was hoping I could attract some of the more western/HUS/casual trail type riders to give it a try as well by making it very casual, no hunt coats needed, costumes and themes encouraged, etc.

Resolved Question: What saddle would be best suited for riding a pegasus?

So, it's nice of a silly question that popped into my head while driving to the barn the other day and I thought I'd share. If you had to use a saddle to ride a pegasus (no bareback!), which type of saddle would you use and why? Basically, which type of saddle (racing, dressage, barrel, close contact, roping, etc. etc.) do you think the form/function is best suited for riding a flying equine? Do you think contact would be important, or weight, balance, etc.?

Open Question: Three-day eventing with my horse?

My horse is about 15 hh and he's a Bashkir curly gelding. He's in really good shape and he is athletic. He is really great at dressage (my mom rode him once for her dressage trainer and the trainer said that he was a REALLY good dressage horse). He loves to jump and he loves to run. My instructor said that he'd probably be pretty good at cross country. The only thing is that he's not very quick. He'll go quick if he has to. But most of the time he does this wonderful rocking-horse slow canter that is great in dressage and for jumping, but not so great in timed events. Do you think i could do 3-day eventing with him? not huge competitions, of course, but locally and to receive us better at eventing? wat do you think?? thx btw, just for fun, here's a pic of him. He's so cute i adore him!!! http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/oo189/princemybaby/Prince.jpg ya he's kinda muddy and dirty in the pic, but still! i adore him and i want him to exell so do u think i could event with him? thx

Resolved Question: Need helmet recommendations - for dressage, oval shaped head?

I'm needing a new helmet, and wanted to receive some recommendations. I would be using it mostly just for schooling, but would like something that could also go in the show ring for dressage and maybe a few little hunter shows. So none of those cute helmets with the stripes, sorry. I have not seen them in the dressage ring yet! Also, I have an oval shaped head, so many brands do not seem to fit me well. The Troxels don't fit at every- too round. I had a Tiperrary helmet that fit great, but I can't use it in the show ring. Any suggestions for something attractive, comfy for an oval shaped head, and well ventilated? Preferably something I can pick up at Dover saddlery. I'm totally OK with a BLACK stripe, but nothing that stands out too much. I know there are no rules for helmet style, but I prefer not to stand out with my attire. Call me a traditionalist...

Open Question: can a german martingale help teach dressage headset and carriage (I HAVE tried all the natural ways)?

i seriously have tried every the natural ways (no "aids" or "devices") because i know that natural is better, and my mare wont respond. Will a german martingale work for training a dressage headset? or if you have anything else to say, I'm every ears. I really hate to use any devices like this, but I'm getting desperate. I've had several local trainers ride her without success. is there anything else that is more effective? I need to stay away from anything that puts pressure on her poll, though, because she doesn't like pressure there.

Open Question: Help! horse bit question...?

Ok...so I am looking for a bit that: doesn't 1) dig into the horse's pallet 2)compress the horse's tongue 3)doesn't dig into the bars of the horses''s mouth where is rests on when being pulled I want it to be sensitive as I do dressage with my horse and have some lever action, I want him to feel it but NOT hurt him. I can't find a bit, every of them somehow inflict pain on the horse. BTW, I ride with an extremely light hand, I mainly ride with my seat so...do you know of any bits? I just need to know what they are called...and one more question: What bit do you like the most? I was thinking maybe this one:http://www.bitsnmore.com/images/catalog/reinsman_bits_web_read/R342b.jpg I am not going to use a snaffle, they inflict more pain than you think. I want a bit that has some leverage too and what I mean by sensitive is that the horse feels it more. I think everyone should watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a-aV0Rsxmg

Open Question: Am I allowed to use this bit for dressage?

My gelding, Uno, is an OTTB, so he is very contact-sensitive. I have been riding him on a racing D-ring snaffle that is wrapped with a latex bandage (http://www.kyhorse.com/store/bandages/sealtex.htm). This keeps him from over-tucking like he used to do and encourages him to maintain a light contact with the bit. I am planning on going to some three day events this year with him, our first one probably at starter novice. For dressage (and xc and stadium, for that matter), will we be able to have our bit wrapped in the latex? I am aware that the plastic or rubber mouthed bits are allowed, I've seen those. I'm just wondering about the latex. Thanks! =]

Voting Question: What level do you think i am?

This is nice of a repeat of a previous question, but with more detail: I am 15 and I ride at a riding school and can walk, trot, canter and jump - the biggest i've jumped is about 1metre give or take a bit. i can walk trot and canter without stirrups but have never tried a jump yet. I have tried a bit of bare back and walked trotted cantered and jumped, i stayed on but my position wasnt very good. i can do dressage movements - turn of forehand etc and have done x-country and some cometitions which i have been placed in, but they were only riding school competitions, although i did receive to the final of the main riding school competition in britain. i've been riding about 4/5 years. at the riding school we do have some easy horses but they are normally worked on the lower level lessons and we normally ride the more difficult horses, (by difficult i mean they buck/ bronk sometimes or are less attentative to aids, but nothing extremley green, although there are afew slightly younger greener horses that the higher levels can ride) but we dont ride the same horse every week. As far as stable management, i can groom, tack up, un tack, feed, fit and put on rugs, muck out, guide, lunge and loose school (though a member of staff has to be 'gift' officially by the rules at my riding school but they normally just watch or receive on with othe (continuing) other tasks) I am preparing for my stage 1 and am hoping to take it within 6 months, but i so far have no qualifications. If you need more info just ask. Thanks x sorry, forgot something else: I can train younger or newer volunteers to do the tasks mentioned over an am allowed to do tasks without supervision that some others arnt allowed e.g leading on roads, mucking out etc. (only certain people can muck out as too much bedding was being wasted) x

Voting Question: how do u teach a western horse english? and another question too :)?

i dont think i will really train my 2 yr old dressage or jumping or anything for sometime, haha, but i was kinda interested in teaching him some english, how would i go about doing this? i dont have any english tack, and where i live, most do western, so used english tack is difficult to find anyways but id like to tutor him some basic jumping and english in the future. my other question was when a foal comes weanling age, and you had a gelding and the mom, plus the foal, would u put the foal and the gelding together, (since i would only have two fences) ot would you put the mare and gelding together. I just dont know which i would do because im not sure if the mare would do anything to the gelding, because hes SUPER sweet and GENTLE! so he wouldnt do anything, but would the mare? idk, im looking into getting a mare thats about to drop her foal, so i was just planning things out. lol, sorry for making this question so long! glad trails and thanks for your help!

Voting Question: How to learn Vaulting,Dressage and Jumping?

Background/details:I have a tough situation where I'd like to learn vaulting, jumping, and dressage. Money is not that easy flowing so I cant just take lessons for each one every other day. I'm 13 and started horseback riding at the age of 11. I can ride English and western and can jump. I just want to compete in each discipline.[jumping, dressage and vaulting] Also my horse is a paint horse too. I have tack for English and Western and that's it. With my allowance I receive 30 a month and go to the stable 3 days a week. Never done dressage or vaulting and don't know any gymnastics. I have a pal who can do gymnastics though. Key questions: How to learn each sport? How to receive money easily? Are clubs good and are they involving money?

Voting Question: can somebody please give me some advice on the basics of dressage?

I've been riding for a couple of years, but I recently switched from like english pleasure to dressage- it's difficult! i rode for 6 years at another barn, but since switching to dressage i realized that they taught me to physically ride but they didn't tutor me how to /really/ ride (ie. feeling the bit&elemental stuff like that). i've only had a few lessons so far, and my instructor keeps telling me about like letting the energy from the horse's hind legs flow through my legs, down my arm, through my fingers, and to the bit. and she also tells me to "become a part of the bit". i understand that she's trying to receive me to loosen up because for years i've been taught to ride the wrong way. i try to loosen up and i really try to understand what she's telling me but i'm new to this stuff and i just don't understand what she's trying to tell me. also with the whole keeping my elbows "glued" to my sides business: how am i supposed to brace them in one spot while also keeping my arms and body relaxed? i probably just need more experience for these things to start "clicking" for me, but i was wondering that maybe if somebody else could explain it to me, it might make more sense. so what i'm asking is: what's the correct posture for riding dressage? how should i keep my arms and legs and abdomen? how do i use my weight to communicate with my horse when i ride? am overthinking things? please bear with me, i know that my questions might seem base and obvious to you if you're an accomplished rider but i'm sure that you were a confused beginner at some point. i apprecaite any help!!! I am currently looking for a new dressage saddle for me and my horse. I don't want anything synthetic or with crappy leather. Price isn't really a factor I'm too concerned about right now, but I'll just say probably below $1200 (I will be looking new and used however, so if you have a good saddle in mind over that price, feel free to mention it.). I'm pretty short- 5ft1in and my horse is also tiny, 14.1 hands. She however is difficult to fit and has a very low wither on top of being ever so slightly downhill and more on the narrow side. What would you recommend for a saddle?

Open Question: Is this the horse for moi?

I am looking for a good first horse. I now how to w/t/c/g and jump 3 feet. Not sure about his breeding. There is definitely some Arabian there and then maybe some QH or Paint. Up-to-date on shots and dentistry Currently wears shoes in front for jumping Was started in May 2009 by me so I have done every his training. I have two part boarders so other people ride him as well. Very responsive to aids and easy to steer. Smooth gaits. Did a novice hunter class (2'3") in August and a radical jumper (2'6", 2'9") in September, has schooled some 3' cross-country jumps. A very willing and honest jumper. Doesn't care too much about gymnastics. Does showjumping-style guide changes over jumps (I'm not into hunter). A great hack horse, he is not afraid of anything (hasn't been hacked on roads though) Does first level dressage including leg-yielding No vices, doesn't bolt/buck/rear. Not too crazy about shoeing but good with the vet, clipping, pulling mane etc. Can be kept inside or outside; however, gets cough from roundbales Low in the herd hierarchy if in the paddock with a bunch of horses, may be more dominant with just one horse depending on that horse' mentality A dream to receive into and out of a trailer; however, gets antsy if has to wait in the trailer Would this horse be a good horse for me? Thanks i didnt train him. this was copyed off an email that the owner sent moi

Resolved Question: Are you breed-ist.......?

Do you discriminate against a horse just because of its breed? I know I do - I would never buy a quarter horse or appaloosa because those are "western horses" and I want an eventing one. But I KNOW that both qhs and appys can event/jump/do dressage/be english. I actually know a really good eventing quarter horse. Better than me, for sure. And yet...I would still automatically eliminate that horse if I were looking to buy. And it isn't even stock breeds in general; I almost bought a paint mare a while ago. The difference - she was wearing an English saddle in her ad. I don't look at the horses wearing western saddles even if they say they also go english. And if I were looking between that really nice qh eventer with great conformation, the best temperament in the barn, and absolutely no problems except he needs additives in his feed or an okay but nothing special and not really trained thoroughbred...I think I would always go with the tb just because of my "breedism" I have an Arab, so I hear about this nice of a lot among the jumpers especially. "What are you doing jumping an Arabian? Those are too crazy to be anything except halter horses". Except I know that he jumps fine and really isn't that hot at every and receive every offended when they say he is mental...only to do the same exact thing to their appaloosas? (To clarify, I am in no way discriminatory against western in general - I just don't do it, so that isn't what I am looking for in a horse. I would actually like to try it one day, reining or cow work, specifically)

Resolved Question: Do you think this horse is too young for me?

I'm 14 years old and I've been riding since I can remember. I've been taking English lessons since 2nd grade and have done jumping (2.5ft) and started some dressage. I'm a very confident rider and have been through experiences of being bucked off, stepped on, just about anything. I've been on trail riding trips of up to 7 hours straight of riding which have involved steep uphill and downhill, crossing rivers and ditches. I've been in a few shows. I've spent months with my Aunt and have done every of the work of taking care of her four horses as if I owned them. I do know how to ride western as well. I've been around horses my whole life. I have some experience with the Parelli Natural Horsemanship training. I've been to horse camps and on camping trips with horses. Do you think this horse would be ok for me? Breed: APHA- Paint, APHA- Paint OVERO Date Foaled: April 2005 Height: 15hh Gender: Mare Color: Bay Temperament: 2 Talented and sweet bay overo mare, with a great disposition and mind. She learns quickly and wants to please. Has been shown successfully in open shows, 4H, state 4H, OHSET, and state OHSET. Her first year competing in OHSET, she placed in the top ten in both showmanship and English. She also placed 2nd in state in In-Hand Obstacle Relay. She will make a great youth every-around horse in whichever direction you want to take her. She has been trained in English, Western, Showmanship, in-hand trail, and is started on trail. She trailers, clips, bathes, and stands for a farrier. She would also make a great trail horse and she is extremely calm and easy-going. She is a great girl. She is very calm, not spooky. I use her for showing, but she also likes the trails. She is very sweet, and loves to be loved on. She doesn't receive "marish" at every and has a consistently good attitude. She can be a bit pushy on the ground, but will grow out of it. She is a difficult worker, and wants to do what you ask. She loads, is good in her stall and around feeding time. I have never had her do anything harmful to someone or herself, and she is very smart I'm asking because this girl thinks with her only being 5 years old that her training is not that established and that it could possibly diminish over time. So what do you guys think? every comments appreciated! Even though I've done jumping and dressage and have enjoyed it, it's not something I would be doing for shows or anything. I'm more interested in having a buddy that I can take on trail rides and ride around in an arena doing basic stuff. We probably wouldn't be in any shows. wish that helps a bit.

Voting Question: Would you ever take out a loan to buy a horse?

I've decided it's impossible to find a quality dressage prospect within my price range. Sure, there are lots of alternatives, like buying a well bred young unbroken prospect, but I'm getting older and time is not on my side! I have been struggling my entire life with less-than-desirable prospects and while every horse is a valuable teacher, I'm just very sleepy of waiting to achieve my dream of upper level competition. I've arrive to realize that I'm probably never going to have $30k+ just sitting in my bank account to drop on a quality horse, but I have excellent credit and could afford monthly payments. I know there are no "horse loans", but I could take out a personal loan or home equity loan. If I went so far as to take out a loan for a competition horse, I would insure the horse at full value, so should anything happen to the horse, including loss of use, then I would be covered.... right? I would be able to use the insurance money to pay off the balance of my loan should something disastrous happen? What do you think?

Voting Question: Anyone who went to olympia horse show and or has a personalised riding jacket.?

Hi I'm 13 and i went to olympia horse show. It was really good. Then after that at my riding stables some people had these waterproof jackets that were fleece on the inside, they had a drawing of a horse show jumping or a horse doing dressage. They also had the persons name on it. I really liked them and i asked one person where she got it from she said olympia horse show. Does anyone have or seen a jacket like i described? If you have Please tell me and where did you receive it from like a website or something. Thanks x A photo might help please. Can you tell me where it's from Or can anyone give any websites for personalised riding jackets.

Resolved Question: I'm 5'4-5'5, he's 17.3hh plus....?

I found a gorgeous, young, and athletic gelding for sale. He was born in 2005 and is a CWB. He looks great in dressage and has a nice neck and headset with a big step and is just starting in jumping. He is $25,000. Just, the only thing I am 5'4-5'5 with long legs and he is 17.3hh+. Is he too big for me, exspecially for jumpers? Of course I would try him out first and every thing, just I dont want to go there looking like a fool riding this massive animal. Iv seen many tiny riders and big horses, just not this big. It would be a big change for me considering im riding a 15hh mare and a 16hh gelding. But I can addapt quikly as I have ridden many different horses. If we did buy him we wouldnt take him to shows right away anyways, Id spend a year or so working on him first. Here is his ad and videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIv1Td9D4-8 - dressage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STmsWxUSNpI -jumping lesson. http://www.youtube.com/user/MapleCreekF#p/search/0/a3BUMb5LBCI - jumping larger fences. http://maplecreekfarm.ca/?page=horses&horse=55&media=3 - ad and bloodlines. If I did ride him, I would do jumpers with him but Id also receive dressage lessons and do a few cross country clinics on him just for the exsperience and what not. I may do a few dressage shows on him and possibly a event or two, but Id like to focus on jumpers with this horse. Tell me what you think of him, his price, and if he would be to big for me? Thanks!

Voting Question: have a question with trotting and cantering?

my horse is most energetic in the tardy afternoon/evening. to build up confidence in both of us, i stay at a walk in the roundpen. now she follows my cues perfectly. she stops, turns, and backs right when i ask. sometimes she puts up a lil fuss, but some of those are my fault, and i let her know it wasnt her fault unless it really was. i can tell she is getting bored walking in the round pen, always the round pen. next time im over there, im riding in the arena. its a really good size, and new things. were both ready to trot, ive trotted her before, but something happened a while ago, and so we havent trotted in almost a year. my question is, is how can i receive her to trot? sick nudge her sides and click, but she wont trot. she does it perfectly when i click and im on the ground. shes a 17 year old arabian/morgan mare. she can be lazy, or very fresh. what is the clearest way so she knows i want her to trot? and if she doesnt trot, what can i do to make her trot? should i ride with my dressage whip just in case? thank you everyone!! and any extra tips that anyone would like to share would be greatly appreciated!!

Resolved Question: Am I the right standard to ride a fit hunter? UK?

Im considering taking on a job at a local private yard, the lady owner has 3 horses, an ex-dressage horse who is now retired, a 15.3 ponyclubber and a 16.3 irish thoroughbred hunter, who is hunting fit. The job is basically every aspects of their care, including exercising the 3 of them, mainly hacking out & road work, but a little schooling/jumping. Anyway, I know i'll be fine on the other two, but was wondering about the tb hunter? Because the owner said that although he would never receive up on his back legs and is 100% bombproof, her husband was a little weary about me riding him. I can walk, trot, canter, have galloped a few times but not that much, jump up to like 1m/1.10m, and have ridden green four year olds, just of the track ex racer tbs and warmbloods. I have only once ridden a hunter, and found him really sweet and placid, even though he was quite fit. So roughly do you think I would be ok on him? I know it totally depends on the horse, and I won't really know until then...but what do you think? BTW, im not talking about american 'hunter jumpers' or whatever its called? I live in England :) Thanks :)xx
